Class Description
Active Yoga
A flowing yoga class. Individualized poses are linked together and held progressively longer to build
strength and endurance. Hand weights to enhance upper body strength, core strengthening, hip
openers and balance are emphasized. This class is appropriate for those with arthritis and
conditions where weight bearing on the wrists, knees, fingers and toes would be damaging, but
who are strong enough to complete sequences of poses without a rest. (Level 1.00 – Moderately
Difficult)
Tai Chi (begins Tuesday, March 23rd)
Arthritis Foundation approved Tai Chi program. Sun style Tai Chi uses slow & gentle movements to
improve strength, flexibility, posture and relaxation. This style of Tai Chi is well known for its
smooth, flowing movements which omit the more physically vigorous crouching and leaping of some
other styles. It’s gentle postures and high stances make it very suitable for geriatric exercise and
martial arts therapy. Suitable for all ages and levels.
Back Care Yoga
A class with a focus on protected spinal mobility, balance, and strengthening. Participants must be
able to get up and down from the floor. Participants will learn poses that can be used on a daily
basis at home to strengthen the neck and back. (Level 0.75 – Moderate)
Gentle Yoga
A class for those just beginning yoga. The class uses standing and floor postures plus gentle
strength training with hand weights. Special attention is paid to protection of wrist, hip, knee, and
ankle joints. Class is supportive with laughter and sharing of lives. (Level 0.50 – Easy)
Almost Yoga
A chair yoga class providing full range of motion to each joint. Time for rest is built in. Focus on
balance, strength, memory, and prevention of falls at home. Appropriate for those who do not get
down on the floor. Continuous individual attention is provided. (Level 0.25 – Very Easy)
Yoga Nidra
A deep relaxing and restorative yoga, which permits the development of an incredible calmness,
quiteness, and clarity. It is a technique of yoga that brings greater awareness and clarity through a
guided relaxation. Bring blanket, pillow, socks, and yoga mat. (Level 0.25 very Easy)
