Acupuncture FAQs

How does acupuncture work?
Chinese theory states that rivers of energy called qi (chi) run throughout the body. When
energy becomes blocked in one area, it may create symptoms of excess such as pain,
headaches or digestive problems. There may also be a deficient or depleted condition causing
symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, mood changes or hormonal imbalances, Treatment
removes blockages and balances the energy which helps resolve symptoms and typically results
in an overall feeling of well being.

What is a treatment like?
People get very relaxed during an acupuncture treatment It is because the needles help the
energy to flow smoothly and the “pebbles in the path” usually dissipate.

What are the needles like?
Acupuncture needles are very thin. They are single use, solid (vs. syringe needles that are
hollow), stainless steel, sterile and disposable. They slide in very easily and do not cause
damage to the skin or muscles.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Since the acupuncture needles are so small, you may feel a prick when the needles go in. Once
the needles are in, you may not feel anything or you may notice a sensation of mild aching,
warmth or heaviness near the site, which is the beneficial sensation of qi or energy moving.

How often do I need to come?
Acupuncture works best if you initially receive a treatment once or twice weekly. As you feel
better, time between treatments may be increased. I recommend that you allow 6-8 treatments
to recover, depending on the condition. Acute conditions such as injuries may need less time,
while chronic conditions, may take longer.

What does acupuncture treat?
Chinese medicine dates back more than 2000 years and is still used at hospitals in China. It can
treat most conditions, but is best known for its effectiveness for pain, including headaches,
arthritis, strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal and neurological problems. Other conditions
commonly treated include digestive complaints (reflux, constipation, gas and bloating), fatigue,
PMS, insomnia, sinusitis, depression, and weight loss.

Will my insurance cover acupuncture?
Many insurance companies cover a part of the cost of acupuncture with a licensed acupuncturist.
It is best to contact your insurance company.
